Materials and Tips for ESL

ESL for migrant farm workers

ESL Materials

Summary of Materials:

Each ESL lesson we have created includes a lesson plan and additional resources. The additional resources are from the following textbooks and websites.

ESL LESSONS:

The ESL lessons have been created by the NC MEP AmeriCorps VISTAs using web-based research and resources.

TEXTBOOKS:

Oxford Picture Dictionary: Personally, we both love this book. It goes into great detail with specific vocabulary to help refine  English conversation based on topic. It also has pictures to accompany the vocabulary and could be of great use to supplement lesson plans and conversation topics. Be sure to ask one of the VISTAs for a copy if you would like to use this particular resource. (recommended*)

Survival English: A mix of worksheets, games and other pen and paper activities which could be useful to add to lessons or be given as homework.  These worksheets are outlined after the basic conversation one would find necessary to communicate in the English language.

Action English Pictures: This book is full of photocopiable activities and pictures for common words and actions. Try this book if you are looking for pictures or illustrations of certain verbs or nouns (i.e. brushing teeth, waking up, etc.).

Materials have been dissected and placed throughout the entire curriculum according to where they are applicable. However, this placement is not binding and you can move pages/units around to better suit your class’s progress or your own teaching style.

There is also a section of miscellaneous, optional lessons that you can include if your class is ahead of schedule or desires a greater challenge.

ONLINE RESOURCES:

Under this section, we have included the links to the various documents that have been attached throughout the outline of the curriculum. If you are still searching for more, feel free to explore on your own through the internet, public library, or county literacy office.
